Thank you so much for taking the time to check out what's new here on the Oliver + S blog! Summer always seems to be a whirlwind, so we’re grateful you’re here. Today, we’ve got something truly special for you—Mathew is back with yet another incredible creation. If you remember Mathew, you’ll know his previous projects were nothing short of amazing, like the woven Secret Agent Trench coat or the weaving tutorial he shared for the Hide-and-Seek Dress. It’s such a pleasure to have him back with us! [Image description: A stunning photo of the Woven Mud Cloth Tea Party Dress] Mathew, could you tell us a bit about yourself and where we can find you online? **Mathew:** Sure thing! You can find me blogging, sharing my creations on Instagram, connecting on Facebook, pinning inspiration on Pinterest, tweeting updates on Twitter, and selling some of my handmade items on Etsy. Now, let’s talk about the project you’ve shared with us today. Could you walk us through the details? **Mathew:** Of course! This project is called the "Woven Mud Cloth Tea Party Dress," and it’s made using the Oliver + S Tea Party Sundress pattern. For the fabric, I chose three beautiful Mudcloth prints from Sharon Holland’s Tapestry Collection by Art Gallery Fabrics: Earth, Blue, and Inky. These fabrics worked beautifully together—their colors meshed effortlessly, and the secondary pops of color added just the right touch of elegance. The drape of Art Gallery Fabrics is fantastic for garments like this, and the decision to use a dual-hue skirt was inspired after seeing how the bodice came together. Was the fabric easy to work with? Absolutely! Working with these fabrics was a dream. The primary hues blended seamlessly, creating a cohesive look that was both modern and timeless. The secondary colors added a delightful contrast without overwhelming the piece. As for the drape, it was perfect—Art Gallery Fabrics are known for their quality, and this project didn’t disappoint. When it came to the skirt, using two different colors wasn’t part of my initial plan, but once the bodice was complete and I saw how the skirt panels were cut, switching to a dual-color design felt like the natural choice. How did the sewing process go? The sewing went smoothly, as most Oliver + S patterns tend to do. The only tricky part was attaching the curved bodice to the skirt. But honestly, it’s similar to sewing a shirt sleeve onto an armhole, which is something even beginners can handle with confidence. The curve isn’t too sharp, so it’s manageable for everyone. What was your favorite part of making this dress? Without a doubt, seeing the finished dress on my daughter was the highlight. She loved it so much that she wanted to wear it to school the very next day. Watching her walk around with a little extra spring in her step was priceless. Plus, there’s something magical about seeing a garment come to life on a dress form. That’s when I realized how perfectly the skirt’s cut framed her figure—it was absolutely stunning. --- Before we wrap up, do you have any tips for someone who might want to try this project themselves? Sure! Start by choosing fabrics that complement each other well, and don’t be afraid to experiment with color combinations. Also, take your time with the sewing process, especially when joining the bodice to the skirt. And most importantly, enjoy the creative journey! Thank you, Mathew, for sharing your talent and creativity with us. We’re thrilled to have you back, and we can’t wait to see what you create next!
