At the D.PARK venue of the China International Fashion Week, designer Wang Peina presented her "Spring Peña" 2010 Spring Summer Collection. As an associate professor at Qingdao University and the founder of her own clothing brand, Wang's show drew a significant audience, including college faculty, students, and media representatives.

Wang Peina described her creative process, saying, “Urban space is both specific and uncertain. I tend to see it as a fashion relationship. Fashion is the ongoing history of a city—it can reflect on the past but ultimately leads us to the future. My inspiration comes from the shape, internationalization, alienation, and future of human nature. In a postmodern cultural context, I use deconstructed styles, neutral colors, and eco-friendly fabrics to express humanity, femininity, and intellect in urban settings.â€

Wang Peina is the first designer from Qingdao to participate in the China International Apparel Week. She graduated from the Beijing Institute of Fashion in 1993 and has since been deeply involved in teaching at higher education institutions. Her career highlights include winning the first prize at the 12th “Jeans Cup†China Casual Wear Design Grand Prix in 2003, being named one of the “Top Ten Fashion Designers in Liaoning Province†in 2004, and receiving the “Top Ten Fashion Designers in Qingdao†title in 2005. She also won the Silver Sail Award for young designers in 2006 for her collection “Delicious Moments,†and was honored with the “Best Women’s Wear Brand†award in 2007. In 2009, she received a bronze award at the “China Changshu Clothing City Cup†Leisure Design Elite Competition.

Her brand, Peña, targets women aged 30-45 in Qingdao, offering European-style, casual fashion with a focus on elegance and sophistication. The brand uses neutral tones and emphasizes modern, intellectual aesthetics.
The theme of this season’s collection, “Urban Space,†reflects Wang’s vision of fashion as the living history of cities. Each piece explores different aspects of identity and self-reflection. The “I Am†series draws from contemporary architecture, emphasizing geometric shapes and details. “Who and I†integrates cashew patterns with a blend of Eastern and Western techniques. “I’ll Go Where†expresses futurism through high-tech materials and bright colors. Lastly, “Who I Am†uses a play of black and white outfits to symbolize the concept of “shadow.â€
While the collection showcases strong conceptual ideas, some viewers noted that the fabric texture was slightly rough, the silhouettes were complex, and the overall style felt more autumnal than spring-like. The gray-dominated palette lacked the vibrancy typically associated with spring and summer collections, giving the impression of a more subdued, melancholic mood rather than one of renewal.
Despite these observations, Wang Peina continues to push boundaries in her work, blending academic insight with real-world design challenges. Whether or not the collection will resonate with the market remains to be seen, but her unique vision and dedication to innovation remain clear.
